The CBD against pain and Headache

The interest of the CBD in alleviating chronic pain is becoming more and more known. But do you know how cannabinoids work against pain? In which cases can the CBD be useful and how to use it?

The action of CBD against pain

There is a growing number of studies and research on the analgesic effects of cannabis. Although researchers have not yet fully uncovered the mechanisms of action on the human body, the various studies carried out to date seem to converge towards the same conclusion: CBD acts on pain receptors.

Our body has an endocannabinoid system. It is made up of numerous receptors scattered throughout the body that intervene in the regulation of certain functions such as sleep, immunity or pain. Cannabis is said to interact with these famous receptors involved in pain regulation by blocking the absorption of anandamide. This is why using CBD helps to alleviate painful sensations. Cannabinoids also have an indirect impact on pain.

Hemp has indeed proven relaxing properties. However, all people who suffer from chronic pain will tell you that stress and anxiety, linked to the fear of suffering, only accentuate the inconveniences linked to the disease…

The CBD for what pain?

While the experimentation of cannabis for therapeutic purposes in France is only just starting, several countries already authorise the medical use of cannabinoids. The CBD is often prescribed to alleviate chronic pain that is resistant to known drugs or to side effects that are too severe. In our country, some doctors do not hesitate to discreetly recommend CBD to their patients to help them manage their pain.

Cannabinoids have indeed shown their effectiveness in chronic inflammatory diseases such as osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis or fibromyalgia. The combination of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of cannabis improves the quality of life of patients suffering from these ailments.

How to use CBD against pain?

It is impossible to recommend a precise dosage of CBD. It all depends on your body’s sensitivity to cannabinoids, the pain to be relieved and your consumption habits. The only advice we can give you is to start with a low dose of hemp and wait a while to see the effects before possibly increasing the dose.

CBD is available in different forms that allow you to reconcile the recreational side of hemp with its pain-relieving action. However, if you wish to enjoy the benefits of cannabinoids but do not like the smell or taste of hemp, you can turn to CBD capsules. Please also be aware that the effectiveness of CBD on pain depends on the quality of the product and the way it is consumed. For a fast action, it is thus advised to consume a few drops of CBD oil in sublingual or cannabis flowers or an e-liquid by inhalation.

CBD can also act locally against pain. It then proves to be very effective both for benign pain as well as at the end of a sporting effort, and for suffering caused by more disabling pathologies such as rheumatism or osteoarthritis. Simply massage the sore area with a CBD cream or CBD oil to feel relief.

CBD to fight Headache

Migraine is one of the most widespread and difficult to treat. Although research is still in its infancy, it appears that CBD is an effective weapon against Headache, both in treating the causes of the disease and in alleviating its symptoms.

Migraines, the scourge of Headaches

Although Headache is very widespread, its origins remain unknown and it is very difficult to treat it. Worldwide, 1 in 7 people, mostly women, suffer from Headaches. The symptoms of this disease and the attacks that affect those who suffer from it vary greatly. A Headache attack can last from a few hours to 3 days. It manifests itself as very painful headaches, often located on only one side of the skull. The patient may also suffer from nausea or can no longer tolerate noise or light. Some people will only have rare Headache attacks, while others will suffer recurrently. This violent headache, so widespread, can therefore be very incapacitating in daily life.

The CBD to calm Headaches

It is logical that such a widespread evil has been studied by researchers working on the effects of the CBD, although it is regrettable that legislative blockages have long hampered these fields of research. Yet the use of cannabinoids by Headache sufferers seems very promising. Research was conducted in Colorado in 2016 where 121 Headache sufferers used medical cannabis with CBD. The results speak for themselves. 40% of people saw a decrease in the frequency of Headaches. For 11% of the patients, the Headaches even disappeared. Researchers believe that hemp acts in two complementary ways on Headache.

The CBD and the triggering of Headaches

It has been shown that most Headache sufferers have problems with serotonin imbalance. In particular, low levels of this hormone can lead to dilation of the blood vessels, which can lead to Headache attacks. Cannabinoids are well known for their role in maintaining good serotonin levels. Many studies also show the importance of stress in the development of Headaches. And it has been shown in rats that stress, when it lasts a long time, results in an alteration of serotonin receptors. Knowing that serotonin is also known as the happiness hormone, it is easier to understand why CBD, whose relaxing effects are well known, can act against Headaches. Many people who suffer from chronic stress and Headache attacks have got into the habit of taking CBD regularly to regain a better balance in their lives and relax… A wellness that often leads to a reduction in the frequency of Headaches.

CBD to fight against Headache pain

Cannabinoids can help Headache sufferers in another way by reducing the intensity of their pain. The interactions between CBD and the body’s endocannabinoid system are becoming increasingly well known. This system is particularly involved in the processing of pain signals. By acting on the CB1 and CB2 receptors present there, the CBD helps to combat pain sensations. Moreover, therapeutic hemp is used to relieve patients in a growing number of pathologies. Researchers are also beginning to suspect that a deficiency in endocannabinoids could be a trigger for Headache in certain patients. Both to prevent attacks and to treat them, CBD offers great prospects for the treatment of Headache.

Is the CBD useful for depression ?

Cannabinoids are known to have a relaxing and anti-depressant action. But can CBD still be used to treat depression? Here is an overview of the known effects and current therapeutic research on legal cannabis.

What is depression ?

Depression is an illness characterized by mood disorders (sadness, pessimism), loss of motivation, difficulty making decisions and a tendency to isolate oneself. It results in a variety of disorders such as loss of sleep or appetite, sexual problems and reduced intellectual and physical performance. In its most severe forms, depression can lead to suicide. This disease is widespread in the West. In France alone, it is estimated that about 19% of the population suffers from mild to severe depression. Our country is also world champion in the consumption of antidepressants. Doctors traditionally prescribe antipsychotics or serotonin reuptake inhibitors to combat depression. However, the side effects of antidepressants are now infamous. As a result, more and more people are looking for healthier alternatives to treat themselves. CBD, even though it is not authorised for therapeutic use, is therefore regularly mentioned as a treatment for depression.

Research on CBD and depression

Research on the use of CBD against depression focuses in particular on the effects of the substance on the brain. The body has an endocannabinoid system that amplifies the action of serotonin and thus affects mood and appetite. Many researchers believe that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoids by increasing the activity of serotonin receptors.
A study conducted in 2016 on mice showed that CBD administration results in more active and motivated animals. For the researchers who conducted the study, the effects of cannabinoids are comparable to those of a well-known antidepressant, imipramine.

Another recent study published in Molecular Neurobiology has shown, again on mice, that CBD increases resilience to the stress of depression in a rapid and lasting manner.
However, the use of CBD as a drug to treat depression is not yet authorised in our country. Cannabinoids are nevertheless being used by an increasing number of people to alleviate the symptoms of depression.

CBD and the symptoms of depression

The CBD can bring real well-being to people suffering from depression or low mood by helping them to fight the symptoms of the disease.

The calming and relaxing properties of CBD first of all make it possible to alleviate peaks of stress and thus reduce the anxiety of depressed people. It also makes it easier to fall asleep and allows a peaceful sleep. Consuming products containing CBD therefore helps to reduce fatigue.
Finally, depression is known to have significant repercussions on the body: back pain, digestive problems, etc. By alleviating the pain associated with depression, cannabinoids once again bring a sense of well-being to everyday life.
CBD is not a cure for depression, but it can be very useful as part of an overall support of the depressive state. More and more doctors are recommending it to their patients as a supplement to conventional therapy, until CBD can be prescribed as a drug for depression.

The CBD to combat anxiety

Do you have to deal with stressful situations or do you feel anxious all the time? Stay calm, the CBD can help you get rid of anxiety. We explain everything to you.

What is anxiety ?

Feeling anxious or stressed is quite normal when approaching an exam (driving licence, diploma…) or when you have to speak in public… Stress can then boost you and lead you to surpass yourself. But it can also happen that the anxiety is so strong that it prevents you from performing well and leads you to fail the exam or the presentation that you mastered perfectly! Admit that it is still raging to fail because the stress has overwhelmed you. Taking CBD can then help you approach the important deadlines in your life with more serenity to succeed better.
Anxiety can also literally ruin your day-to-day life. This is a medical condition, related to aggression or difficult living or working conditions, called chronic anxiety. If you turn to conventional medicine to treat this anxiety, you will most likely be prescribed anxiolytic medications with side effects that are difficult to tolerate. This is why an increasing number of people with chronic anxiety are turning to CBD, which has no side effects, as a complement to their therapy.

CBD against anxiety

Numerous studies have demonstrated the beneficial action of cannabinoids against anxiety. The journal Neurobiology thus published a study in 2011 in which two groups of people suffering from social anxiety were led to make a public speech. The first group was given CBD and the second a placebo before the trial. Unsurprisingly, the people who consumed hemp suffered less anticipation stress and were more successful in their speeches. Tests carried out in medical imaging have also shown that the consumption of CBD influences the limbic action of the brain, which is involved in emotions and memories, resulting in less anxiety.
The most promising research on the links between CBD and the treatment of anxiety focuses on the influence of cannabinoids in the body’s management of serotonin. It has long been known in the medical world that depression and anxiety are linked. Many conventional medications have an influence on the level of serotonin, the good mood hormone. CBD has been shown to interact with serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, known for their role in regulating stress and anxiety.

How can CBD be used to reduce anxiety ?

The choice of the form and quantities of CBD to be consumed to combat anxiety depends on your consumption habits, your sensitivity to cannabinoids and the desired effects. It is important to know that spraying CBD flowers or concentrates has a rapid effect on the body but does not last as long. This mode of consumption can therefore be interesting if you have to cope with a sudden rise in anxiety or a stressful one-off event. However, it is not advisable to consume CBD just before an examination. In this case, it is much more interesting to take cannabinoids the day before to have a calm and deep sleep in order to arrive fit and concentrated at the test. If you prefer to consume CBD oil as a drink or in cooking recipes, the effects will be longer in the future but will settle more durably over time.
